POP AMBIENT 2012 begins in an unusually new but nevertheless somehow familiar fashion. MOHN with MANIFESTO is the opening act. A manifest of slowness. A slowness that Jörg Burger and Wolfgang Voigt have taken up as new mission. MOHN is their new ambient-grunge-downbeat project, scheduled to depart on its official musical journey to Middle Earth early 2012. What follows is equally surprising: the old KOMPAKT swashbuckler SUPERPITCHER is taking part for the very first time. His piece JACKSON is borne by a slightly uncanny, spherical voice floating above a jazzy pop accord coolness and faintly 70ies sequencer aesthetics.
It is followed by a familiar face from past times who is making an anonymous return on KOMPAKT under his new pseudonym MOREK. PAN is a textbook example of a classical piece of pop ambient music. Timeless elegance. MAGAZINE, the “krauty“ electronic guerrilla from Cologne-Deutz, has tailored the piece THE VISITORS BUREAU we all know from Magazine 4 into a measure-made ambient frock. Then comes Jörg “TRIOLA“ Burger with a solo appearance. His multifaceted, intricately woven Arabian Nights-style sounds, with effectively placed harmonic shifts reminiscent of Pink Floyd in the best of their phases, indicate why the piece RICHMODIS was named after an old Cologne saga.
Enter the Pope of Ambient: WOLFGANG VOIGT masterfully continues his impressive creative ambient frenzy in RÜCKVERZAUBERUNG 5, not by stagnating on the usual planes but by further developing his new concept into a novel direction of abstract jazz. BVDUB is taking part for the third time – for a good reason. The Dutchman, who lives in China, leaves nothing to be desired with his sensitive musical signature, over and over again. Likewise, MARSEN JULES constantly refines his bizarre, flickering sound constructions and even adds percussion drums that are atypical for ambient. SIMON SCOTT is a newcomer to POP AMBIENT but certainly no unknown face. The Englishman already impressed the scene a while ago on the Miasmah label.
His contribution “ For Martha“ is a particularly good piece of classical pop ambient music that fits into this year’s compilation like an homage. A relaxing final appearance is provided by a good friend of the house: Axel“The Field“Willner alias LOOPS OF YOUR HEART charms us with a light-footed, pleasantly filled guitar loop tempting us to press the Start button at the end of the CD/record.
CHRISTMAS PRESENT: THE POPNONAME CLASSICS
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Magazine on CLFT
LISTEN/DOWNLOAD: POPNONAME LIVE MIX!
Popnoname – Exclusive Live Mix – September 2011 by Kompakt
on Kompakt.fm
If you visit Cologne there is a very probable chance you will hear or meet Jens-Uwe Beyer aka POPNONAME. The past year for him have been immense – from spearheading the COLOGNE TAPE collective which includes members JÖRG BURGER (aka THE MODERNIST), ADA, PHILIPP JANZEN (of VON SPAR), CRATO and BARNT and his 2011 collaboration with DRUMS OFF CHAOS (aka JAKI LIEBEZEIT of CAN). Both projects found releases on the critically acclaimed new imprint MAGAZINE he also co-runs. That said, Beyer’s enthusiastic demeanor and creative vigor has easily marked him as a key figure in Cologne’s re-blossoming music community. Internationally, Beyer is likely known best due to his long-standing contributions on KOMPAKT’s POP AMBIENT series, but his forays into dance music have placed him as potentially one of the most overlooked talents of the last decade. Take his releases on ITALIC, FIRM and KOMPAKT speak volumes – RESIDENT ADVISOR went as far as to proclaim his last full length “Surrounded by Weather” as being that it “isn’t the final defining statement in emotive vocal house, but it comes damn close.” Take a listen for yourself as we are offering this exclusive live mix featuring some stellar gems from his catalogue and also a brand new, unreleased remix for the PRO-TEZ imprint. NEW MAGAZINE RELEASE
MAGAZINE – CONCERTS, FESTIVALS, SHOWS AND OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS
The next debut on MAGAZINE:
Collaborating in art, music and science since 1999, recently founding the label MAGAZINE
and the collective Cologne Tape, this is nevertheless the first time Barnt, Crato and Jens-
Uwe Beyer aka POPNONAME appear together as one formation, simply called MAGAZINE.
If you combine their recent releases – Barnts stunning debut EP “What Is A Number, That
A Man May Know It?”, Crato’s acclaimed and mysterious “30.6.1881″, J-U Beyer’s
incredible sound work on his highly respected last album (with Jaki Liebezeit’s Drums Off
Chaos) and add the Cologne Tape recordings you can get an idea of the formation’s
cosmos — but you are not quite there…
Living in Cologne the past decade with exceptions of some years spent in London and
Manchester, the group is based on DJ-culture as much as on the german electronic music
tradition as you will hear: The whole record is pockmarked with overflowing melodies —
sometimes well structured, sometimes wild and wooly. Sum up Hieroglyphic Being-like
arpeggios and transparent, highly original computer rhythms or strange eight-oh-eightlive
drumming and choir-or-not-like sounds and you get these strange dance floor
moments again – Impossible to make out whether the peculiarity of this EP’s sound is all
intentional or accidental.
The artwork continues the conceptual MAGAZINE series on high quality, heavy stock
– something to hold in your hands!
Watch out for MAGAZINE 4 LIMITED:
A very limited edition of 44 records comes with a stamped and numbered individual print
(series of 44 b/w prints, 29×29cm)!
